Faith & Fun Family Events

Hunting: A Family Tradition
Sunday, October 15, 2006, 4:30-6:30 pm

Family includes uncles, aunts, neighbors, friends, guardians, grandparents, moms and dads. Family includes the community of faith. In short, all are welcome!  Darrold Perrson will be our guest speaker talking about how hunting, in their family, has become a family tradition. We will be taking the time to bless all of the hunters that will be in our woods and for their safety.

We will be having a "Chili Dump"! Make your family's favorite chili recipe and bring it to this event to share with others. We'll dump all recipes together for a "Chili Dump" meal. Please join us even if you don't wish to make chili - we always have lots of extra food!! If you prefer, bring a sample of some of your famous wild game recipes or a dessert to share!

There will be stories to tell and fun to be had by all. Plan to share a few of your stories too!

Pastoral Acts

There were
two baptisms,
two weddings, and
one funeral performed.

Global Mission

The Global Mission Committee is off and running for another busy year at Our Savior's.

For the HUNGRY

The bulletin hunger facts for October are about hunger and justice issues in Minnesota. Childcare and early education were big winners this year in the 2005 legislative session. $24 million was appropriated in the supplemental finance bill to address childcare and to clear some of the waiting lists for childcare assistance. Also a significant step to end homeless-ness in MN was taken and a Legislative Commission to End Poverty by 2020 was created. Thanks to the many advocates who called, wrote letters, and E-mails to their legislators in support of the legislation.

Operation Christmas Child

Once again, we will be supporting many troubled countries by taking part in Operation Christmas Child, a mission of Samaritans Purse. A needy child overseas will receive a wrapped shoe-box for Christmas hand delivered with small toys, school supplies and hygiene items. Included in the box will be a story about Jesus, "The Greatest Gift of All" translated into his or her language. What an opportunity to share the Gospel with these children!

To be a part of this special service project, you may fill a shoebox (with a removable lid), donate items from the list below, or donate money. The boxes and gifts are sorted according to a boy or girl and into three different age groups. Be sure to remove all packaging to provide more room in the box. The shoeboxes are sent out before Thanksgiving to assure delivery by Christmas. This is a great family service project!

Suggested Gifts:

Please DO NOT include the following items: Used items, Toy guns, knives, or other war-related items Chocolate or perishable food items Liquids of any kind (shampoo, lotion, bubbles, etc.) Medicines of any kind (vitamins, cough drops, etc.) Breakable items (china dolls, snow globes, etc.)

Bazaar News

The theme for the 2006 bazaar is again "Holly Days Bazaar" and the date is set for Saturday, November 4. The craft group is working very hard finishing up their projects. Join us on Tuesday mornings anytime between 9 and 11:30 in the Boy Scout Room to help out. We will be having one or two evening craft nights the week or two before the bazaar. Information for that will be posted in the bulletin. Remember, the bazaar is only about 4 weeks away so any help would be greatly appreciated. Also, anyone is welcome to make crafts on their own and bring them to the bazaar.

We are looking for donations of fiberfill. Of course, monetary donations are always welcome and appreciated. Please drop off at the church office and mark it "bazaar".

We are still in need of a lefse chairperson. If no one comes forward we will be forced to discontinue it this year. Doughnuts will be made that week. Times will be determined as the day draws nearer. Questions? Contact Laurie 262-1798; Carol 262-3512; Patty 263-4519 or Shirley 263-8608.

The cookie room will be around again this year. It has been a huge success the past few years. Let's continue this great tradition—keep baking those Christmas cookies!

Let's make this another successful bazaar. Thank you.

Stewardship Committee

Twenty-seven of forty-three parables in the Bible are metaphors for the subject of money. Why does Jesus talk about money so much? Maybe it's because He knows what effect money has on us and our spiritual lives. Is your life focused on God or on money? God wants to give us many blessings. In Matthew 7:7-11 Jesus says: " Ask, and you will be given; seek and you will find; knock and the door will be opened to you. For every one who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened. Or what man of you, if his son asks him for bread, will give him a stone? Or if he asks for a fish, will give him a serpent? If you then, who are evil, know how to give good gifts to your children, how much more will your Father who is in heaven give good things to those who ask him!" God's willing to give freely to us, but He also wants us to use those gifts to glorify Him and help mankind.

October 14th will start the annual estimate of giving campaign, We are encouraging you to explore the blessings God has given you and reflect the reciept of those blessings in your estimate of giving. Tithing means giving 10%. So one has to ask, is 2% an appropriate response to the gifts and blessings God has given us? Two percent is less than $20 a week for a family making $50,000 per year.
In our continuing effort to inform members of OSLC about our financial status: Just last week we had to borrow $4,126 to meet our obligations for health and pension benefits to the staff. In addition to the $4,126, we still owe approximately $7,000 for benevolences such as global missions, missionaries, and synod.

Youth Council

The Youth Council would like to provide everyone in grades 7-12 with an opportunity to get involved!   This year as members of the Youth Council, we will be focusing our attention on a leadership program called "Peer Ministry". This group will begin training on the following Wednesdays beginning at 7:00 pm: 9/27, 10/4, 10/11, 10/25, 11/1, 11/8, and 11/15. Peer Ministers develop a sensitivity to others who are not adapting or fitting in, making every effort to welcome and include others in all situations, promoting diversity and acceptance.

Sunday School Key Versus

Here is the verse for October 1, 8, & 15:
"The seeds that fell on good ground are the people who hear and welcome the message." (Mark 4:20).

Here is the verse for October 22, 29, & November 5th:
The Scriptures say, "Love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, strength, and mind." They also say, "Love your neighbors as much as you love yourself." (Luke 10:27).

Please help our children learn this verse each month. Grandma's, Grandpa's, Aunts, Uncle's, Friends, Mom and Dad can all share in helping our children grow in faith! Remember: Youth & Family Ministry begins with "adult renewal"!
