January 2007

Come and join us at the Fair!

Our Savior's Lutheran Church is hosting the Third annual Time and Talent Fair on Sunday, February 25th between services in the Fellowship Hall. Groups and committees will be setting up booths with fun and information on what they do and how you too can get involved and be a special part of the church. Join in the scavenger hunt. Delicious baked goods and refreshments.  See you there!

The Stewardship Committee

Social Action/Hunger Committee

The Social Action/Hunger Committee would like to thank everyone who helped in any way with the Thanksgiving and Christmas food boxes. It is a culmination of a lot of people making lists, buying groceries, packing boxes, delivering boxes, making and taking phone calls, and donating food and money. We also received $ 500.00 from the women's group here at OSLC. We sent out 21 very abundantly packed Thanksgiving boxes and 22 Christmas boxes. Thank you for the donation of children's quilts and marble bags to go along with the boxes.

Now looking forward to 2007 we are planning for the Souper Bowl of Caring. This will take place on Feb. 4th. It's a day we put out our soup pots and collect money—a dollar or so— toward hunger related charities. It is a part of the ELCA World Hunger Appeal but we can donate the money to the hunger charity of our choice. Last year ELCA reported donating over $ 725,000 to hunger related charities that serve people in the United States and around the world.

Pastoral Acts

There were two baptisms,
one marriage,
and four burials
performed during
the month of December.

Global Mission Speaker

On January 28th our guest speaker will be Pastor Orin W. Cummings of the Guyana Lutheran Church of South America. He is a student of the Luther Seminary studying the History of Christianity and the rise of religious fundamentalism. When he returns to Guyana he will be prepared to establish a Lay Ecumenical Academy to equip and train Guyanese for lasting lay leadership. Mark the date on your calendar, January 28th, to hear Pastor Cummings.

You are invited to attend a potluck on Saturday evening, January 27th, at 6:00 p.m. to welcome Pastor Cummings to our congregation

Note: In 1992 Pastor Paul Hill spoke to our Sunday School children about his trip to Guyana. He showed slides of a river boat ministry to the Guyanese to "go and tell the Good News' to the Guyanese who could be reached only by boat.

Sunday School—Beginning January 7th the Sunday School will begin a study about Estonia. Pastor Kathy will share her experiences about her trip to Estonia. The study will include scripture reading, crafts, and a treat from Estonia. Children, come and enjoy!

Christmas Poinsettias and Animals in the Stable

These gifts are given for poinsettia plants for our worship and farm animals to help need families through the ELCA World Hunger Appeal. These gifts make Christmas beautiful for us and for people around the world. Gifts total over $800, or 60 rabbits, 14 goats, and 13 pigs! Thanks be to God!

To our beloved members over 65 years old!

Our church family thanks you for all you have done and still do! To show our appreciation we are planning a special dinner for you in fellowship hall on FEBRUARY 11th following the 2nd service. You can enjoy eating and visiting accompanied by dinner music.

Following dinner, we will move upstairs for a presentation of the one act play I'm Herbert performed by Pastor Kathy and Pastor Erik. I'm Herbert is about an older husband and wife sitting on a porch and talking. Just talking—and of course they don't know how funny they are. Each is a little hazy about the details of their lives, but they love each other, and their disagreements end happily.

To reserve your spot please call Bruce at 262-5753 or the church office at 263-7422 before February 5th. If you need a ride please call one of the above numbers. (Please leave a message if you call after business hours; the answering machine is always on.)

Sunday School Key Verse

Here is the verse for January 7, 14, & 21:  "I have good news for you, which will make everyone happy. This very day, in King David's hometown, a Savior was born for yon." (Luke 2:10-11)

Here is the verse for January 28:  "Let's Celebrate! I've found the coin I lost" (Luke 15:9)

"This son of mine was dead, but has now come back to life. He was lost and has now been found." And they began to celebrate. (Luke 15:24)

Please help our children learn these verses each month, grandmas, grandpas, aunts, uncles, friends, mom, and dad can all share in helping our children grow in faith! Remember: Youth & Family Ministry begins with "adult renewal"!

2006 - A Year in Review

Once again as we begin a new year, it's always nice to go back and look at all the great things that have happened in the past year in the Youth & Family Ministry area. Our youth are more involved than we sometimes realize. Mere are just some of the things that have happened over the course of die last year, plus they are involved in worship, music, Sunday School, Confirmation process, etc.:

Church and Community Needs

Items needed for Sunday School Projects: 50 pint canning jars with lids and rings if possible, wide or regular mouth. These items are needed for a Creation Station Project by January 28, 2007. Also, 5 bags of bird seed—a mix with sunflower seeds. For a February 25th project we will need 50 baby food jars with lids.

Soup Kitchen - OSLC will be cooking, serving, and cleaning up at the Salvation Army the 4th Wednesday of every month.  How about your Circle or Shepherding Group???

Radio Broadcast Sponsors - Many dates are still available in January and February. Each Sunday's broadcast costs $50. Call the Church office.

College Students Contacts - We are looking for more individuals to keep in contact with our college students. Our goal is for each volunteer to have 1 or 2 students to periodically connect with while they are away at college. Right now we are asking for volunteers for the 2004 students.
