The artist uses the traditional, yet powerful, imagery of three crosses to symbolize the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. Marks representing the nails used to pierce Christ's hands and feet are shown on the center cross. Also on this cross is a delicate gold crown.
In the center of the panel are the crown of thorns and the sponge with vinegar used in the trial and crucifixion.
On the right side of the panel stands a lone Roman guard, representative of the world's greatest army. His task is to guard the tomb of Christ.
